"Survived" is the first track from Act 3 of The Residents' 2025 "modern opera" Doctor Dark. The first half of Act 3 shifts the story's focus back on the teenager Mark who has survived a suicide attempt.
This is the only track not to have been released in demo form on the DDDEMMMOOO mini-album or the Doctor Dark's Demos compilation.
Libretto
Having miraculously survived the suicide attempt, Mark is sitting in a hospital bed. Silent, his internal dialog confronts the themes giving meaning to his empty life: Guns, Guts, God and Glory. His stepmother enters the room and begins to pray, and this time he joins her, but the teenager's religious zeal doesn't quite match the fervor of his earlier heavy metal mania.
GUNS! GUTS! GOD! GLORY!
Jesus frees us with his mercy Jesus frees us with his love Jesus frees us with his soul Jesus frees us with his bliss from ending in an endless hole. Jesus frees us from our hurt, with peace and passion from above; Jesus frees us with his wisdom. Glorious is God! Glory is my God! We shall soon be bathing in the blood of God.
