Edwin Outwater (born April 12th 1971) is an American composer, conductor and producer. He has served as conductor and director for various orchestras and musical institutions, such as the Florida Philharmonic, the Tulsa Philharmonic and the BBC Concert Orchestra, and has been on the music faculties of the University of Tulsa, Idyllwild Arts Academy, and University of California.
Since April 2020, Outwater has been the musical director of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In this capacity, he has worked with The Residents twice to date: firstly as conductor of the group's 50th Anniversary secret show at the Conservatory in January 2023, and then as conductor and co-producer on their 2025 studio album and "modern opera", Doctor Dark.
History
Edwin Outwater was born April 12th 1971. In 1993, he graduated cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in English literature. While at Harvard, he was music director of the Bach Society Orchestra. Outwater continued his education at the University of California in Santa Barbara, where he earned a master's degree in conducting.
From 2001 to 2006, Outwater was resident conductor of the San Francisco Symphony. In parallel, from 2001 to 2005, he was music director of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, where he led the orchestra in all of their concerts as well as on tour to Europe in the summer of 2004. During the tour, the orchestra made its debut at Vienna's Musikverein and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, and returned to Amsterdam's Concertgebouw. In 2004, Outwater's education programs received the Leonard Bernstein award for excellence in educational programming.
From 2007 to 2017, Outwater was music director of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. In April 2020, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music announced the appointment of Outwater as its music director.
In July 2022, Outwater conducted the BBC Concert Orchestra for the first time, at the BBC Proms; he conducted the orchestra again at the Proms in July 2023. In June 2024, the BBC Concert Orchestra announced the appointment of Outwater as its next principal guest conductor, with the additional title of curator, beginning September 1st 2024.
