"Remembering Mother" is the third track from Act 2 of The Residents' 2025 "modern opera" Doctor Dark. This track has Dr. Anastasia Dark reminisce about his Russian parents. Like the rest of Act 2, it musically switches focus from the heavy metal of Act 1 to a style more inspired by modern classical music.
A demo of this track was released on the Doctor Dark's Demos album, exclusive to streaming services, later in 2025.
Libretto
Continuing to reminisce, Doctor Dark sings about his father, who was killed in the Russian Revolution, leaving his mother alone and pregnant. The grieving woman somehow managed to flee Russia and escape to America, where she eventually settled in North Dakota.
I often think about my mother; When I saw her she was dying, so I kissed her. Alone in Russia wept my mother, upon the bones of her dead lover. She heard the sound of angry voices screaming to the beat of stomping boots upon the backs of heroes in defeat; She understood that fever eats itself when it succeeds, and nothing means success like bodies bleeding in the street. So she sailed upon a ship, her belly swelling like a melon, and she went to North Dakota where she wept among the willows.
