"Let It Be" is a song written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon, which was originally recorded by The Beatles for their 1970 film and album of the same name.

"Let It Be" is the first Beatles song known to be performed by the group who would later become The Residents, as they briefly play abortive renditions of it on their 1970 demo reels Rusty Coathangers for the Doctor and The Ballad of Stuffed Trigger.

The Pre-Residents' versions of the song have never been officially released to date, but has circulated among fans on low quality bootleg versions of the two tapes. The Rusty Coathangers tape ends with a cover of another Beatles song, "Yesterday".

Lyrics

The Beatles' version

When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, "Let it be"
And in my hour of darkness, she is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, "Let it be"
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
And when the brokenhearted people living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Yeah, there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light that shines on me
Shine on 'til tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, "Let it be"
Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
Oh, there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
Oh, there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
