"Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)" is a song first recorded by Dick Holler & the Holidays, written by Don Smith and Cyril Vetter. It was later recorded by the Swingin' Medallions who released it as their second single in 1966. Peaking at #17 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, the recording became a hit although banned on many radio stations due to lines referring to drinking and sex: "worst hangover I ever had" and "she loved me so hard". The Residents have covered the song for three separate projects.
History
Original Version
Double Shot of My Baby's Love was first released in 1963 by Dick Holler And The Holidays. Holler was an Indianapolis, Indiana native but had relocated to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, when he was a teenager. Coincidentally, the young Residents were also living in Louisiana at the time and may have heard Holler. In 1957, Holler formed 'The Rockets' and released Living By The Gun / Uh Uh Baby with that group. Shortly afterward, he changed the name to 'The Holidays' and released seven singles by them throughout the early 1960s.
The group's third single, "Double Shot of My Baby's Love" (Written by Don Smith & Cyril E. Vetter), was released in 1963. Initially, the song was not a success but proved to be popular for artists to cover, with fellow Louisianan Dale Houston immediately releasing his version.
After The Holidays broke up in 1966, The Swingin' Medallions released their Beach Rock interpretation of the song, which proved insanely popular, and charted at #17 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Other notable artists covered the song in the years following, such as Harry Deal And The Galaxies, Clifford Curry, The Uniques (Also of Louisana), and The Tams. However, the song was banned from multiple radio stations in 1966 due to references to drinking and sex.
The Residents' Versions
By 1970, the people who would eventually go on to form The Residents were already fans of the song and showcased their ability to play the keyboard riff during the finale of their private Ballad of Stuffed Trigger tape. After The Residents had officially formed, the group recorded the song as part of their Swastikas on Parade suite. This version combines a stumbling performance of the song's lead riff with backing vocals from A Horse With No Name before transitioning into a creepy sax-driven vocal version with drunken lyrics from a chorus of singers.
Later in their career, The Residents recalled the riff and decided to use it as a leitmotif (alongside Holy Holy Holy) for their fifteenth studio album, God In Three Persons. The theme appears in the album's main title & Hard & Tenderly. To give proper credit and perhaps monetization to the original writers of this riff, The Residents released an extended cover version as a non-album single, featuring a new outro with lyrics from Fine Fat Flies.
In late 1988, The Residents recorded their second version of the track in a year, which appeared on their fan-club exclusive sixteenth studio album, Buckaroo Blues. This version was part of a medley featuring Land of 1000 Dances (Which also appeared in Swastikas on Parade), Double Shot, and Fine Fat Flies.
The last time The Residents revisited the song was in 2012 when demoing material for their 40th Anniversary tour. The group recorded two new versions of the song as an introduction to their longer Kiss of Flesh reworking.

As I walked into the darkness, I could sense a woken sharpness penetrating deep within the room. Then I seemed to hear a snicker, but I was so busy with her that I did not notice him until I felt him put his hands around my throat and squeeze as if the sounds I made should not escape into the air, causing me to moan too loudly as I jerked on out the fire that I no longer could control. I was first to see the flashing blinding light of liquid lashing out my arms, but my convulsions spread to my writhing young companions, who were lost in an abandoned cream that soon would crack and fade away.
