"Circle of Horns" is the third track from Act 3 of The Residents' 2025 "modern opera" Doctor Dark.
This track was the first excerpt of Doctor Dark to be previewed, when an instrumental demo of it was played by Homer Flynn at a radio show circa 2022. By that time, nothing about the album's concept had been revealed other than it was going to be a classical piece done in collaboration with an unnamed conductor (Edwin Outwater).
A demo of this track was released on the Doctor Dark's Demos album, exclusive to streaming services, later in 2025. This is not the same demo that was previewed in 2022; that version of the track has not yet officially resurfaced.
Libretto
As the program ends, Mark enters a new reverie, a pleasant dream, seductive, unpredictable and bathed in a warm and liquid light. This vision is suddenly interrupted by nurses announcing his next operation, causing the teenager to enter a frightening world of masked faces and whirling delusions, fueled by narcotics, anguish and pain.
I dreamed I saw Saint Augustine. My heart was in his hand; His smile turned everybody green, like melancholy plants imagined in a magazine beside a bed of ants.
[NURSE] "It's time... it's time... it's time for you to come with us. It's time for your next procedure. You will look so much better after this next operation. So it's time to come with us. It's time... it's time... it's TIIIIMMMME!"
