January
- 7th: 'Don't' is released by Elvis Presley. It is his last single released before being drafted into the military. The song reached number 1 in the US charts, and was covered by The Residents in their 1990 'Don't Be Cruel' EP.
March
- 19th: Warner Bros. Records is formed
- 24th: Elvis is drafted into the military. This event is charted in The Residents official 1988 calendar.
September
- 22nd: Peter Gunn is broadcast for the first time. The Residents would later sample the theme from Peter Gunn on their song Fire.
October
- 'Try Me' is released by James Brown and The Famous Flames. The song reached number 43 in the US charts. The Residents would go on to cover this for their 1984 George & James album.
