"That'll Be the Day (Baby Baby)" is a limited edition single by The Residents, released July 24th 2023, as a bonus item with copies of the limited edition coffee table art book The Residents: A Sight For Sore Eyes, Vol. 2 by publisher Melodic Virtue.
The single features the group's previously unheard version of the Buddy Holly song of the same name, supposedly recorded in the mid-1980s as an "early demo" for an unfinished entry in the American Composers Series titled Sons of the South: Buddy and Sonny, pairing the work of Holly with that of avant-garde jazz composer Sun Ra.[1] The song (as heard on the single) closes with a short excerpt of the 1980s outtake "Siren Song (of the Shrunken Head)".
The standard edition of the book featured the song on a 7" black vinyl single, whereas the deluxe and super deluxe editions feature the track on a 7" picture disc. It is the second single in the book series featuring previously unheard material, following "Nobody's Nos".
On October 25th 2024, the single was released to streaming platforms and on Bandcamp as a digital download. As with "Nobody's Nos", it had been removed from streaming by October 2025, but remains available via Bandcamp.
