Scent of Mint
"Scent of Mint" is an instrumental by The Residents, recorded during the sessions for their 1982 album The Tunes of Two Cities, but not featured on the original vinyl release of that album.
It was first released in 1988 on the Torso/ESD CD reissue of the album, and was later featured on the 1998 compilation Residue Deux and the 2019 pREServed CD box set Mole Box.
History
A languorous, jazzy piece intended to illustrate the fictional Chub culture within the narrative of The Residents' epic Mole Trilogy, "Scent of Mint" was recorded using the EM-U Emulator, then a new addition to the group's studio.
The song was recorded during sessions for their 1982 album The Tunes of Two Cities (the second of six planned releases in The Residents' Mole Trilogy), however was left off the final track listing for the album, alongside two other outtakes, "Open Up" and "Anvil Forest". All three outtakes were restored to the album's track listing for its first release on CD in 1988.
Although it was not included on the 1983 compilation Residue of The Residents, it was later added to the 1998 CD reissue Residue Deux, and also featured on the 2014 Superior Viaduct vinyl reissue of the album. A newly remastered version of the song appeared as a bonus track appended to The Tunes of Two Cities in the 2019 pREServed box set Mole Box.
To date, "Scent of Mint" has never been performed live by The Residents. Brett Spivey covered the song for his 2012 album Brett Spivey Does The Residents Doing Christmas; in 2016 this cover was included on the unofficial tribute album Who Killed Ralph, Too?. The following year the cover was submitted to the official tribute/cover project I Am A Resident!, however it was not selected for inclusion on any version of the final album.
