"Santa Dog 17" is a single by The Residents, released October 31st 2017 on Psychofon Records.

It features a 2017 re-recording of "Fire", the opening track from the group's debut EP Santa Dog. The single also includes the original version of the song as a B-side.

History

Another of The Residents' regular reworkings of the track "Fire" from their 1972 debut EP Santa Dog, "Santa Dog 17" was released on Psychofon Records in a variety of different vinyl and digital pressings on October 31st 2017 (oddly, Halloween rather than the usual Christmas). The single also included the original version of "Fire" as the B-side.

"Santa Dog 17" was next released (without "Fire") as a free MP3 download for subscribers of Cherry Red Records' Residents mailing list newsletter on December 22nd 2017.

Die Hard Edition

In January 2018 a "Die Hard Edition" of the single was released by Psychofon. This edition featured the A and B-sides of the single on two single-sided transparent 7" discs, which each have silkscreened art on the silent sides, and are glued together, forming a single double-thick 7" picture disc.

The disc is housed in two 12cm x 12cm inlay cards inside a black fabric bag with a printed bone pattern. Attached to this is a black plastic coin with a printed Santa Dog graphic, and hand-written copy number on the back.

Only 45 copies of this edition of the single exist. A small number of rejected transparent single-sided 7" discs intended for the "Die Hard Edition" have also circulated among collectors.
