Granddad (Cube-E)

From RZWiki

"You're weird, Grandpa!" -Shirley

Granddad is a character from The Residents' 1989 album, The King & Eye A long since retired Elvis impersonator, he tells his grandchildren, Shirley and Shorty, the story of Elvis Presley's rise to fame. The Singing Resident voices him on the album, and, under heavy prosthetic makeup, portrays him during the Cube-E live show. While he uses his normal speaking voice on the album, The Singing Resident speaks in a stereotypical Elvis impression during Cube-E live, most likely to fit with the more humorous mood of the live show.

Cube-E Live

During the "Baby King" act of the Cube-E live show, he can be seen sitting with his grandchildren on stage starting with "Ober." He has fallen asleep, and once the song ends, his grandchildren wake him up. He explains to his grandchildren that he had a dream about a "baby who wanted to be king," referring to Elvis himself. They ask to hear more of the story, and he performs Elvis songs to better portray the story of the Baby King.

Throughout the show, there are comic relief sections with the grandchildren, also voiced by The Singing Resident, who find their grandfather's Elvis impersonating strange.

During the "Love Me Tender" 'dream sequence,' he changes costumes into a reflection of Elvis' iconic stage attire from his later years, including a fat suit. During the up-beat finale "Hound Dog," he removes the Shirley and Shorty puppets from the chair and dances around stage with them.

At the Cube-E New Year's Eve show, as an encore, he performed "Santa Dog" live for the second ever time.

The studio album The King & Eye follows a similar story, in which Granddad recites Elvis' story, but it's played a lot more straight, largely because the grandchildren are played by actual child relatives of Cryptic Corporation members.

Secret Show

The 50th Anniversary Secret Show features a short interlude from Granddad, entitled Grandpa Elvis Tells His Baby King Story (Again). In it, a projected animation of his face is shown on a backdrop on the stage, and he recites an abridged version of the Elvis story.
