The Residents: Eyeball to Eyeball / Mezi čtyřma očima (often referred to simply as Eyeball to Eyeball) is a book by Miroslav Wanek and Karel Cisar, published by Argo in the Czech Republic. It contains biographical material about The Residents, as well as a complete (at that time) collection of the group's lyrics (in English and Czech).
The book was released at the premiere of the Czech theatrical adaptation of The Residents' album Freak Show at the Archa Theatre in Prague on November 1st 1995. The book's co-author Wanek was conductor for these shows; Wanek's band Už Jsme Doma has collaborated with The Residents occasionally in the years since.
Contents
The book opens with two biographies on The Residents; "The True Story of The Residents" by Matt Groening (previously published elsewhere) and a new essay titled "Who Are They", an exploration of the people behind the masks via their work, which concludes that "[The Residents] are living people! But still they prefer to speak about it only eyeball to eyeball."
The book's second section, titled "Eyeball to Eyeball" contains a complete (at that time) collection of the group's lyrics (with Czech translations), mostly derived from the 1988 book An Almost Complete Collection of Lyrics, 1972-1988, with more recent material (such as the complete Gingerbread Man CD-ROM script, and material from the game Bad Day on the Midway) supplied by The Cryptic Corporation.
The third section is a discography which is heavily derived from the 1993 book Uncle Willie's Highly Opinionated Guide To The Residents. The book closes with an essay by Peter Cap, "Czech (Sub)Culture in the Resident-Resistant Environment", which explores the group's impact on the Czech music scene.
