"Burning Love" is a 1972 song by Elvis Presley written by Dennis Linde and originally recorded by country soul artist Arthur Alexander, who included it on his 1972 self-titled album. Elvis Presley had a major hit with the song, becoming his biggest hit single in the United States since "Suspicious Minds" in 1969 and his last Top 10 hit in the American Hot 100 or pop charts. The Residents & Laurie Amat recorded a cover of the song for their Elvis tribute album The King & Eye.
History
Although the song was originally by Arthur Alexander, The Residents likely heard the song in 1972 when Elvis' cover of it charted at number one in the U.S Cash Box top 100.
The Residents first covered the song in early 1989, at the Buckaroo Blues show aired on German Television, where the fast-paced and highly choreographed rendition of the song enacted as the encore for the show.
The song was re-worked by The Residents a second time, for inclusion in the Cube-E live show starting in July of 1989. This version removes the fast-paced instrumental featured in the earlier rendition and instead plays it as if it were a slow ballad. A studio version of this arrangement appeared on the album 'The King & Eye'
In 2020, The Cryptic Corporation asked The Residents to curate a selection of their favorite songs from their own back catalog for a Spotify playlist titled "Residents' Personal Favorites"; This was one of forty songs chosen.
