Africa Tree is a song by The Residents & Renaldo & The Loaf. It was recorded partially in 1981 and in the 1983 overdub sessions for Title In Limbo.

Background

The track was recorded by The Residents & Brian Poole at Groove Street Studios in October 1983. Dave Janssen, who had co-written the song with the Poole & The Residents, could not attend the recording sessions in the US, so recorded tape loops in his home studio to be used.

The track was released November 15th 1983 on the album 'Title In Limbo'

In 2017 Klanggalerie finally released the long awaited 4 daze tape. On this tape is 45 minutes of demos that would become "title in limbo". The motif of this song can be heard on "Possible". After these tapes were revisited in 1983 Snakefinger was invited to add violin to the song.

Surprisingly, with this song there's actually quite a bit of history. For being a relatively niche song, it was picked up for their "In Between Dreams" tour, where it was played for the entirety of the tour. This does mean that there is live footage for this song as well as multiple live recordings. For their book "A Sight for Sore Eyes Vol. 2", Aaron Tanner reached out to Brian Poole of "Renaldo & The Loaf" to see if he had any photos from the development of "Title In Limbo." Shockingly, Brian was able to capture a very rare sight. The Residents working in the studio. Since this is the only song to feature violin, it can be assumed that this photo of Snakeginer and Hardy Fox in the studio must be during the development of this song.
